My intention with this message is not to discourage you from getting a guinea pig, so here are some well-meaning tips before you decide to adopt one (I know I repeat myself in posts, but once again):
Don’t fulfill the wish for guinea pigs only for your children. You (the parents) should want them too, as the initial care will mainly be your responsibility.
Children can quickly become disappointed, as most guinea pigs (which is their natural behavior) are fearful, run away, and hide…
Do not place guinea pigs in children’s rooms, bedrooms, playrooms, basements, etc.
Guinea pigs are not “cheap.” It’s a misconception that they cost nothing. You need to consider equipment, food, and more. Find out what they need and what the monthly costs will be (quality food, vet care if needed, etc.).
Around your home, you can expect hay, sawdust, fur, and also a guinea pig smell.
Guinea pigs urinate and defecate a lot, so frequent cleaning is necessary.
And no—they don’t go in just one spot.
Their nails need to be trimmed regularly.
Guinea pigs spend most of the day eating and being active, and they sleep very little (and are not quiet).
You also need to arrange care for them during any absences, vacations, etc.
If you already have other pets at home, think carefully about how you will protect the guinea pigs, as they are usually prey.
…
And yes, guinea pigs are wonderful animals for adults too!! 😉
