General Information:
Rats are highly intelligent and social animals, and they can make wonderful pets. Care for them is generally straightforward, but that doesn’t mean they need less attention than other animals. They require lots of interaction and exercise outside their cage and must have the company of their own kind.
- Lifespan: 2–3 years
- Diet: rat food (pellets), fruit, vegetables, mealworms, dog kibble, brown rice, cooked beans, yogurt, etc.
When choosing a rat, consider giving a home to those who have lost their previous one for various reasons—they deserve a second chance!
Housing and Equipment:
- Rats must have the company of other rats; they can live in larger groups.
- Daily time outside the cage is essential.
- They need a large cage with plenty of accessories and toys. Avoid cages with wire floors, as these can cause injury.
- Ideally, place the cage in a quiet area that is still part of the social space. Avoid drafts and direct sunlight.
- Rats are nocturnal animals.
- Raising the cage off the floor, for example on a stand, is recommended.
Rats love to climb and will happily use ladders, ropes, hanging nets, tunnels, shelves, and other suitable accessories. They will chew on almost anything they can reach, so choose safe materials.
The type of equipment you choose depends on your preferences and budget.
