General Information:
Chinchillas are most active at dawn and dusk, though they can also be active during the day if you interact with them often. Stress or rough handling can cause fur loss, so gentle touch and building trust are essential. With patience, chinchillas will sit on your hand and allow gentle petting.
Chinchillas are a long-term commitment, as they can live 15–20 years with proper care and love. They communicate frequently using chirps, squeaks, and barking-like sounds.
Chinchillas are herbivores. In the wild, they eat high-fiber, low-nutrient, and relatively hard-to-digest foods, including various grasses, herbs, and shrubs.
When choosing a chinchilla, consider giving a home to those who have lost theirs for various reasons—they deserve a second chance.
Housing and Equipment:
- Chinchillas naturally live in families, so you can keep multiple chinchillas together.
- They are very active and curious, requiring plenty of space and regular time outside the cage for exercise.
- Include toys and climbing structures in the cage, such as branches from fruit trees (avoid branches from stone fruit trees), to help chinchillas pass the time and wear down their teeth.
- Chinchillas need dust baths daily to maintain a healthy coat.
The choice of accessories is up to you and your possibilities. Fleece accessories are not mandatory, but chinchillas love them.
Important: Chinchillas should only have fleece (at least on the outer surfaces) from fabrics. If your chinchilla starts chewing on the fabric—even if it’s fleece—remove it from the cage immediately.
