Care for them is generally straightforward, but that doesn\u2019t mean they need less attention than other animals. They require <strong>lots of interaction and exercise outside their cage<\/strong> and must have the <strong>company of their own kind<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lifespan:<\/strong> 2\u20133 years<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Diet:<\/strong> rat food (pellets), fruit, vegetables, mealworms, dog kibble, brown rice, cooked beans, yogurt, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When choosing a rat, consider giving a home to those who have lost their previous one for various reasons\u2014they deserve a second chance!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Housing and Equipment:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rats must have the company of other rats; they can live in larger groups.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Daily time outside the cage<\/strong> is essential.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They need a <strong>large cage with plenty of accessories and toys<\/strong>. Avoid cages with wire floors, as these can cause injury.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ideally, place the cage in a <strong>quiet area<\/strong> that is still part of the social space. Avoid drafts and direct sunlight.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rats are nocturnal animals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Raising the cage off the floor, for example on a stand, is recommended.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Rats love to climb and will happily use ladders, ropes, hanging nets, tunnels, shelves, and other suitable accessories.
